Talk 1: Addressing Security Challenges through Deep Inspection of Big Data on the Blockchain

With the rise of big data infrastructures, so have the challenges associated with tracking changes while maintaining data confidentiality, integrity, and availability of collected data. Maintaining a consistent security program across data collected can be increasing difficult while attesting for changes in the environment.

Securing Big Data has to meet the requirement of data at its provenance, security at and after each stage of transit, provision of secure data analytics, while assuring fine-grain controllability and observability.

To assure big data controllability, traceability, and observability for security, the principle is to create a `nervous system` for big data. This is akin to the bulk of the big data all tethered and controlled by lightweight, metadata-rich keys, sourced from a master trust anchor. Keys must come with an evidence of source of generation and mode of generation.

This talk aims to address those challenges while providing solutions backed by blockchain technologies.

About the Speakers
Derek Chamorro is a Security Architect at eBay and has over 15 years of experience in designing security frameworks at scale. He is part of the blockchain team at eBay, focused on research and development within blockchain security. Derek has presented before at the Openstack Austin summit on Self-Healing Control Plane with Kubernetes. He currently has 9 patent applications under review with the USPTO in the fields of security, key management, and content licensing on the blockchain.

Michael Chan is the resident Cryptography expert and Security Architect at eBay Inc, San Jose, CA. His eclectic interests span 16 peer-reviewed publications and 10 patents in the fields of Biomedical engineering, Blockchain technologies, Security/Cryptography, Banking and Telecom applications, and embedded systems, with 13 more patent applications currently under USPTO review. He founded eBay’s Cryptography Unit and Innovation Initiative and co-chaired eBay’s Trusted Computing Group (TCG), Mobile Platform, for 5 years (2012 to 2017).

Talk 2: Operational Visibility for Hyperledger Fabric Networks

Jeff Wu, Senior Product Manager from Splunk’s Blockchain team, will demo new functionality that they are building for Hyperledger Fabric. Our aim at Splunk is to enable our customers to easily monitor and gain insight into the stability, security and performance of blockchain networks. He will also discuss challenges and potential solutions to some of the problems with monitoring blockchain networks.

About the Speaker
Jeff Wu is a Senior Product Manager on Splunk’s Blockchain team and has over 10 years of experience in data science and data engineering. Previous to Splunk, he was an engineering manager at Atlassian where he led their data warehouse and data integration teams. He has also spent an inordinate amount of time building a reinforcement learning agent to predict outcomes for NBA fantasy sports.
