Workshop: Defining 'Blockchain'

  • Starfish Mission 1535 Mission Street San Francisco, CA, 94103 United States (map)

Everybody's talking about it, but really what is 'blockchain'? While 'a blockchain' is pretty straightforward, 'blockchain' is a bit harder to pin down.

Is it a data structure? A technology? A data ownership model? A new field of computer science? A post-scarcity economic philosophy?

This event will be a loose workshop format; we'll break out into groups around shared interests to discuss, dispute and develop a definition for 'blockchain' then convene to share what we've discovered.

We've heard an exhausting amount about it, let's figure out what we've been saying.

Some usage examples for consideration:

"How blockchain could displace Facebook"

"Why Blockchain Values Your Privacy More Than Facebook"

"Using blockchain, we can.."

"With blockchain, we can imagine a world in which contracts are embedded in digital code"

"Blockchain is the technology which powers Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other cryptocurrencies"

"To understand why blockchain matters, look past the wild speculation.."

"Considering the daily churn of news around blockchain.."

"Blockchain has captured the interest of leaders across the spectrum as a technology.."

"Blockchain refers to a type of data structure.."

"Blockchain is a type of distributed ledger.."

A couple articles for consideration:
